The presence of Regnum Christi and the Legion of Christ in Paraguay began unexpectedly and in a profoundly providential way, marked by personal initiatives, chance encounters, and a growing interest in their apostolic spirituality.

With foundations still small but firm, Regnum Christi and the Legion of Christ in Paraguay are embarking on a journey that, according to their founders, promises to continue growing through the witness, formation, and enthusiasm of those who discover their spiritual path. How did it all begin? What activities are currently underway, and what does the future hold? Fr. Luis Rodrigo Núñez, L.C., tells us.

It all originated when a group of young Paraguayans, exploring content on social networks about theology of the body, discovered the work of the consecrated woman of Regnum Christi Rebeca Barba. Motivated by this first approach, they began to follow its content until the opportunity arose to participate in a course taught in Mexico.

During that retreat, the young women came into direct contact with members of the Legionaries of Christ and consecrated women of Regnum Christi, an experience that sparked a strong enthusiasm in them. Upon their return to Paraguay, they decided to take a further step and sought a way to establish formal contact with the movement. Following guidance, they contacted the territorial leadership in Chile, which led to the first institutional ties.

From that moment on, Father Gabriel Bárcena, L.C. and Javier Caballero, L.C., made an initial visit to the country to explore the viability of starting activities. At the same time, and in a way that the protagonists themselves describe as “providential,” a Venezuelan family—who already knew the movement from their experience in a Regnum Christi school in Madrid—moved to live in Asunción. Upon arrival, they also expressed their interest and established contact with the territorial leadership, which strengthened the nascent local group.

This double impulse allowed the first meetings to be consolidated. During this initial stage, Father Javier began traveling approximately once a semester to Paraguay, where he met with groups of married couples and interested young people, thus laying the foundations of a growing community.

Later, there was a change with Father Javier Caballero with my arrival to the territory, but now serving from Buenos Aires. Since then, visits have intensified, taking place approximately every two months.

During these stays, multiple activities take place: meetings with young people, meetings with married couples, training talks, short one-day spiritual retreats, collaborations in parishes, and personal accompaniment for those who wish to learn more about our spirituality.

One of the recent milestones was the last visit, in which in addition to organizing retreats for young people and families, the presentation of my book written together with Father Gabriel Abascal, L.C. called “Why do men live less?” The agenda also included interviews in the media, both on radio and television, which contributed to giving greater visibility to Regnum Christi and the Congregation in the country.

Although it is still in its early stages, those in charge emphasize that its growth is constant and vibrant. More and more people are participating in educational and apostolic activities, and some young Paraguayans have already traveled to Argentina to join missions organized by Missionary Youth. Meanwhile, adults have participated in initiatives in Chile, where contact with schools and educational projects of the movement has sparked considerable interest.

Many interesting opportunities are opening up” as there are people who are deeply enthusiastic about charisma and seek to integrate it into their daily lives.

In this process, we can witness the providential dimension with which the project has developed: unexpected encounters, key people who emerge at opportune moments, and a growing interest that seems to consolidate organically.

Beyond the numbers, what stands out most for those familiar with Regnum Christi is its Christ-centered approach, its apostolic zeal—focused on extending the Kingdom of Christ—and its strong family spirit. Added to this are the close support and holistic formation its members receive.

It is a very beautiful moment because it allows us to see how God is acting step by step and how people appreciate and are captivated by our charism.
