Week 4 of the 2026 General Chapter: Looking to the Future with Hope in Christ

Published on 13 February, 2026
General Chapter 2026, News General Chapter 2026

The fourth week of the General Chapter (February 3–9) was marked by a spirit of prayer, reflection, and integration at the service of the governance and mission that the Legion of Christ is called to live in the coming years.

Opening Mass of the New General Government

On Saturday, February 7, the Mass marking the beginning of the new general government of the Legion of Christ was celebrated at the International College, with the participation of more than 130 legionaries, including priests and religious.

In his homily, the new General Director, Fr. Carlos Gutiérrez, L.C., urged the legionaries to place Christ at the center of each of their hearts, allowing themselves to be guided by His love. He stated that this will be his priority in the government now beginning: that Christ truly be the protagonist in personal and community life, for only from this foundation can a fruitful priesthood be lived and just decisions be made.

He also emphasized the importance of prayer as a rest for the priestly soul, where one deposits concerns, projects, and hopes to let Christ act in the depths.

Meeting with the consecrated branches
On Monday, February 9, Fr. Carlos Gutiérrez, L.C., and Fr. John Connor, L.C., celebrated the Eucharist for the consecrated women of Regnum Christi who are participating in their general assembly. In his homily, Fr. Carlos invited the participants to keep God at the center: “When the heart is disordered, we begin to revolve around ourselves; but when God is at the center, everything else falls into place.”

After the Eucharistic celebration, there was a dinner organized by the consecrated women, attended by the chapter fathers and consecrated lay people. They took advantage of the occasion to celebrate the birthday of Félix Gómez Rueda, general director of the Consecrated Lay People. Nancy Nohrden also thanked those present, but especially Fr. John for his witness and dedication, especially during the last year of his term.

On February 11, Fr. Carlos celebrated the Eucharist in the community of consecrated persons, the seat of their assembly. In his homily, he recounted how he experienced his election as director general and the days that followed, emphasizing God’s will and trusting in Him. He also asked us to join together in prayer so that “more young people may be called to a life consecrating their hearts to Christ.”

General Government of Regnum Christi
This week, Regnum Christi announced its new general government, following elections held by the assemblies of consecrated women and consecrated lay men and the General Chapter of the Legion. The General Governing Board is composed of those who have been elected as general directors of the three vocations: Fr. Carlos Gutiérrez López, L.C. (Legionaries of Christ), Nancy Nohrden (Consecrated Women of Regnum Christi), and Félix Gómez Rueda (Consecrated Lay Men), along with two lay associates who assist them in the service of government: Horacio Gómez and David Zárate.

Likewise, the General Councils of the Legionaries of Christ, the Consecrated Women, and the Consecrated Lay People have been elected, thus forming the General Plenary of Regnum Christi, together with the lay people elected at the 2024 General Convention, who will accompany the discernment and orientation of the common path of the spiritual family. The General Plenary for the next six years will be composed of:

  • General Council of the Legionaries of Christ: Fr. Hernán Jiménez, LC, Fr. Michael Brisson, LC, Fr. Miguel Cavallé, LC, Fr. Robert Presutti, LC, Fr. Adolfo Güémez, LC, and Fr. David Daly, LC.
  • General Council of Consecrated Women of Regnum Christi: Perla Guadalupe González de la Fuente, Eugenia Álvarez Espinoza, Kathleen Murphy, and Camila Melo.
  • General Council of Consecrated Lay Men of Regnum Christi: José Mateos Brito, Guillermo Campillo, Antonio Maza, Emilio Martínez, and Radek Biernacki.
  • Lay members elected at the 2024 General Convention: Cathie Zentner, Cristina Regueira, Guillermo Narro, David Zárate, Horacio Gómez, and Maria Fioretta Bini Smaghi.

The Federation’s Statutes establish that the General Plenary is a body that assists the Governing Board. Its collaboration expresses the spirit of communion that characterizes the Federation, all with the same mission at the service of the Church.

Work on the lines of government
During these days, the chapter fathers have devoted extensive sessions to working in groups and plenary sessions to identify priorities and lines of action that will mark the path of the Congregation for the next six years. It has been an exercise in listening, discernment, and seeking God’s will amid the challenges of our time.

Spirit of prayer and communion
As in previous weeks, each day began with the celebration of the Eucharist at 7:00 a.m., the center and driving force of chapter life. Around the altar, the chapter fathers continue to nurture the spirit of communion and prayer that has characterized this General Chapter.
