CG 2026 is progressing: communion, governance, and mission in service to the Church

General Chapter 2026, News General Chapter 2026

The third week of the General Chapter of the Legionaries of Christ has been especially significant due to the intensity of the events experienced, all marked by a profound ecclesial spirit of listening and discernment.

On Monday, February 2, the chapter fathers participated in Holy Mass presided over by Pope Leo XIV in St. Peter’s Basilica, on the occasion of the 30th World Day of Consecrated Life. They concelebrated alongside hundreds of religious men and women and consecrated persons from various institutes and congregations. This gesture of communion with the whole Church and the Successor of Peter was an occasion of grace to reaffirm their vocation and mission.

In his homily, the Pope exhorted all consecrated persons to live as “men and women who have seen the Lord” and to be shining witnesses in the midst of a wounded world. “We cannot touch hope if we do not touch our brothers and sisters,” said the Holy Father, encouraging them to live their consecration with closeness, compassion, and tenderness.

On Wednesday, February 4, and Thursday, February 5, elections were held for the new general government of the Legion of Christ. The chapter fathers elected Fr. Carlos Gutiérrez, L.C., as the new Director General for the period 2026–2032, as well as the six general councilors and the general administrator. The new government team, elected in accordance with the Constitutions (nos. 140-141), will assume the service of guiding the Congregation in fidelity to its charism.

We invite you to read the press releases about the election of the new Director General and the General Council. We are also sharing a video summary of that moment.

On Friday, February 6, a Mass was celebrated to commemorate the anniversary of the Decretum Laudis, granted by the Holy See in 1965. This celebration took place in the Basilica of Guadalupe in Rome, with the participation of the chapter fathers, Legionaries working in Rome, and brothers in formation. This anniversary renews the desire to serve the Church with fidelity, humility, and renewed missionary zeal.

In his homily, Fr. Gutiérrez emphasized trust in Our Lord Jesus Christ: “We thank God for all that He has done in the Legion and in each one of us, instruments of His love in the service of souls. Sometimes one wonders, ‘Why me?’… But in that question, the light of his call is also revealed. Why worry? There is no greater responsibility or dignity than being a priest of Christ; the rest are tasks that we take on with humility and availability, knowing that it is He who guides, sustains, and bears fruit.”

The chapter members welcomed with joy the election of the new general governments of the Consecrated Women and Consecrated Lay Men. They thanked God for the discernment that had taken place and joined in prayer for the mission entrusted to them.
