To the Venerable Brother

Cardinal VELASIO DE PAOLIS

During the audience of May 27th, you spoke to me about the development of your ministry as Delegate for the Congregation of the Legionaries of Christ, entrusted to you by my beloved predecessor, Benedict XVI, on June 16, 2010.

I wish to thank you for updating me on the work carried out in fulfillment of this delicate assignment. I also want you to know that I have carefully studied everything you presented in the Report you attached to the letter of May 10th, as well as in the previous Reports and in the material related to the Apostolic Visit that took place between 2009 and 2010.

I confirm that your mandate will conclude with the celebration of the extraordinary Chapter of the Legionaries of Christ, presided over by you, which will take place in early 2014. The main tasks of this Chapter will be the election of a new government for the Institute and the approval of the new Constitutions, which you will then send to me for proper review. These are essential steps on the path toward an authentic and profound renewal of the Legionaries of Christ and, indirectly, also for the activity of the entire Regnum Christi Movement.

Therefore, I kindly ask you to keep me informed about the preparation process of the Chapter, for which I invoke the assistance of the Holy Spirit to inspire all the religious with a complete dedication to the task of discernment regarding their own vocation in the Church and in the world.

I also express my heartfelt appreciation for the dedication you devote to this task. Through you, I wish to send a word of encouragement to all the Legionaries of Christ, to the consecrated men and women of the Regnum Christi Movement, and to the lay faithful committed to it. I assure them of my prayers and, from the bottom of my heart, I send a special Apostolic Blessing, entrusting everyone to the maternal protection of Mary, Mother of the Church.

From the Vatican, June 19, 2013.

Francisco
