We announce the IV Annual Report Truth, Justice, and Healing, the fourth consecutive installment, with our commitments and actions to create safe environments within the Congregation.
We make public the IV Annual Report Truth, Justice, and Healing with a sense of responsibility towards victims of sexual abuse by priests of our Congregation. This document is more than a compilation of activities: it reflects our commitment and actions.
We continue to focus on listening to and understanding the needs of victims, which will allow us to continue the path toward reparation and justice.
This fourth consecutive installment presents the work developed in 2023 related to victim support, the implementation of the Reparation and Support Program, the follow-up of canonical procedures, accreditation and re-accreditation processes in safe environments, strengthening collaboration with external institutions and experts, the study commission on the healthy exercise of authority and the commitments we have made for the coming years, are part of the overall structure of the report, following the work and publication line of the years 2021, 2022 and 2023.
We highlight the steps in implementing the “Reparation and Support Program” with the hope of offering some comfort and more comprehensively alleviating the impact left by the suffering abuse. Our commitment to victims is and will continue to be one of our priorities, and that is why we have been providing reparation and support to 49 victims since 2010. Of that total, 17 people were attended to according to the “Reparation and Support Program,” in operation since 2022. Compared to the previous report, six more victims have been attended to. We hope that this program continues to receive the necessary support, since it is available to all territories, which will help us not only as a guide but also to reach all people who have suffered damage due to sexual abuse. We continue working to have more tools for addressing reports and victims, whether through our own programs or via independent channels.
Another point to consider is that eight of the ten canonical procedures that were open in March 2023 have been concluded. Three new procedures have been initiated and are ongoing, always according to the indications of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith.
In the same year 2023, a study commission was established to examine the healthy exercise of authority within the Congregation to address the issue of abuse of power and conscience in a comprehensive and systematic way, within the ecclesial framework, current culture, and the history of the Congregation, in order to formulate concrete proposals and measures.
Finally, the report presents the commitments to be undertaken, highlighting the strengthening of the response to reports, the enhancement of the economic reparation program, and the expansion of collaboration with external institutions and experts, among others.
