This first Ordinary General Convention will present an opportunity for the vocations of the Regnum Christi to look together at the world and from the Heart of Christ
This first Ordinary General Convention, which will take place from April 29 to May 4, 2024, will provide an opportunity for all vocations of the Regnum Christi to look together at the world and, from the Heart of Christ and its own charism, to give a renewed boost to the mission they share as apostles of the Kingdom.
What is the General Convention?
It is a governing body that meets every 6 years and seeks to analyze the situation of the world and the Church, and how Regnum Christi can better serve its needs based on its own spirit and mission.
On April 24, 2023, the General Directive College and the laity assisting it, composed of Fr. John Connor, LC, Nancy Nohrdem, Félix Gómez Rueda, Francisco Gámez, and Álvaro Abellán, sent a letter to all members of Regnum Christi where they outline the specific purpose of the General Convention:
- The discernment of the apostolic reality and how we can continue responding to the current challenges of society and the Church;
- The reflection on the identity of the lay member of Regnum Christi;
- The implementation of the Regnum Christi Federation to live more fully our purpose (EFRC no. 7) and our mission (EFRC no. 8).
The main tasks assigned to the General Convention (EFRC no. 67) and detailed in the letter are:
- Examine the situation of the world and the Church and how the Federation can better serve its needs in creative fidelity to its own spirit and mission; analyze the situation of the Federation and the most important issues that have been proposed by territorial conventions and the highest organs of the federated institutions;
- Take the most appropriate measures to promote the development and the adequate renewal of the Federation, advance the fulfillment of the mission, face the challenges, and resolve the most important difficulties according to its own spirit;
- Define the priorities for the next six-year period;
- Make the necessary modifications to the Statutes, which must be ratified by the highest organs of the federated institutions and approved by the Holy See;
- Modify or approve secondary codes of the proper law; and issue guidelines;
- If applicable, formulate a recommendation for one of the federated institutions aimed at safeguarding the common charismatic patrimony;
- Assign the assets that are part of the stable patrimony of the Federation, if any.
In preparation for the General Convention, it is planned that during the next semester territorial conventions will be held. These will help to “identify, mature, and prepare proposals for the General Convention” (EFRC no. 70), gather the conclusions and fruits of discernment made by members and localities of their territory to “seek to listen, among all members of Regnum Christi, the voice of the Lord inviting us to go out and respond to the diverse needs of the world and the Church from our charism” (Apóstoles en Misión. Hacer presente el Reino de Cristo hoy. Guías para el discernimiento apostólico de la realidad. Fase local: septiembre 2022- junio 2023. p. 5).
