Alfa y Omega analiza la respuesta de la vida religiosa a los abusos

Alfa and Omega, the magazine of the Archdiocese of Madrid, published every Thursday and distributed with the newspaper ABC, has published a special report on the Church’s work against the abuse crisis two years after the Anti-Abuse Summit at the Holy See.

A part of the special offers a quick overview of the steps that religious congregations are taking. Specifically, it presents the work being carried out by the Jesuits, the Claretians, the Salesians, and the Legionaries of Christ. It also addresses the response from the dioceses and the assessment after one year of the implementation of the “Repara” project, of the Madrid diocese.

Regarding the Legionaries of Christ, the news refers to the Report 1941-2019 of the Legionaries of Christ on the phenomenon of sexual abuse of minors from its foundation to the present and to the documents from the 2020 General Chapter “Conversion and Reparation” and “Protect and Heal,” which include “reflections, decisions, and commitments” when addressing abuses that their members may commit and the care for victims.

The steps taken by the Legionaries of Christ have allowed “progress to be made in addressing each case personally, and especially each possible path to reconciliation with the victims.”

The report also includes statements from Isabel Mónaco, head of Safe Environments in Spain, noting that the steps taken have allowed “progress to be made in addressing each case personally, and especially each possible path to reconciliation with the victims.”

Isabel also comments: “The aforementioned report helped to ensure that the issue of abuse ceased to be ‘a ghost’ and became ‘the concrete story of specific people who had suffered this horror or committed it throughout the congregation’s history.’”
