• The General Assembly is held in two sessions. The first, consultative part took place from April 9 to 18, 2018 in Rome. The second will be from November 27 to December 5, 2018
• The purpose of the extraordinary General Assembly of the Regnum Christi Movement is to discern and approve the legal configuration of Regnum Christi as a whole, to then be proposed to the Holy See for final approval. In turn, it reviews and gives its judgment on the Draft of the General Statutes of Regnum Christi proposed by the General Steering Committee.
• In this first part, initial consensus has been expressed regarding the preference for a collegiate government for the federation, or the participation of the laity at all levels of governance with advisory voting. Greater in-depth consensus will be needed on topics such as the type of federation that will be formed, or the mode of governance of the federation. The main pending issue for agreement is the allocation of the works: whether they will be under the governance of the future federation, under the governance of the branches, or organized according to another criterion.

April 19, 2018.- The first part of the extraordinary General Assembly of Regnum Christi has concluded in Rome. The objective of this first, consultative part, was to express opinions on the Draft of the General Statutes, and on the canonical configuration proposal for Regnum Christi. Until next November, when the second part of the Assembly will take place, the General Committee will prepare a new draft for those chapters of the Draft Statutes that need to be modified according to the considerations and discernment achieved in this first part of the Assembly.

As a result of the process carried out during these 9 days by the 91 representatives from all branches of the Movement (Legionaries, consecrated, consecrated laity, and seculars), the strong convergence of all branches regarding many of the issues on the table has been confirmed, initial consensuses have emerged that still need to mature, and pending agreement topics have been identified. This is the first time in the history of Regnum Christi that members from all branches gather to discern together on issues that affect everyone.

Convergences

In the Message from the extraordinary General Assembly to the members of Regnum Christi at the end of the first part, made public in the following link, delegates affirm the existence of a shared charism and mission, the co-responsibility of all members in safeguarding the charism, the inseparable belonging of the Legion of Christ to Regnum Christi, the recognition of the identity of each vocation, the autonomy of the consecrated branches, and the acceptance of federation as the most suitable legal configuration at this time.

New consensuses, and open topics

During the first part of the extraordinary General Assembly, initial consensuses were expressed by all branches regarding some new topics, such as the preference for a collegiate government for the federation, or the participation of the laity at all levels of governance with advisory vote.

Some of these initial consensuses will require further deepening and understanding, such as the type of federation that will be formed, and its mode of governance. Additionally, the coming months will be dedicated to working on topics where there is still no agreement and that require further study, especially concerning the allocation of the works: that is, whether in the future the works of Regnum Christi will be under the governance of the future federation, under the governance of the different branches, or organized according to another criterion. The Assembly has proposed studying the scenarios resulting from the different options.

A path of reconciliation

Delegates expressed at various moments a deep desire to advance along a path of personal and institutional reconciliation with those who have been harmed or wounded by Regnum Christi and its members throughout its history, as well as a path of internal reconciliation. They approved an initial document to share some initial reflections.                                                                                                                

Profile of the General Assembly

The General Assembly is composed of 91 delegates residing in 14 countries: Germany, Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Italy, Mexico, El Salvador, Spain, United States, Philippines, France, and Venezuela. 37 legionaries (40%) (16 by office, 21 by election); 30 seculars (32%) (1 by office, 29 by election), (13 women, 17 men); 18 consecrated women (19%) (6 by office, 12 by election); and 6 consecrated laity (6.5%) (all 6 by office).

In total, 29 delegates (31%) participate ex officio and 62 (69%) have been elected by members of their own branches.
