Mons. Vicenzo Paglia, president of the Pontifical Academy for Life and Grand Chancellor of the Pontifical John Paul II Theological Institute for Marriage and Family Sciences of the Central Headquarters in Rome, and Mons. Pierangelo Sequeri, president of the Central Headquarters in Rome, delivered lectures on March 14 and 15 at the Institute’s Headquarters in Mexico as part of the 25th anniversary of the Institute in Mexico.

Mons. Perangelo recalled that in recent years two synods dedicated to the family have been held, involving bishops and specialists from around the world. “The marital alliance is a sacrament that does not simply end in Marriage; on the contrary, it should influence all sectors of society,” he commented, highlighting that the sacramental union between man and woman is something that must also transcend into future generations.

Mons. Perangelo stated that the sacrament of Marriage adds a special value to the marital bond, but at the same time requires “dealing with the fragility of bonds that are unique to the human condition.” Therefore, he considered it important for the Church to equip itself with new conceptual tools to respond to the challenges of the era, while Christian communities should be seen as a network of welcome in basic human relationships.

On his part, Mons. Vincenzo Paglia added that Pope Francis, following the line of Saint John Paul II—who published the Apostolic Exhortation Familiaris Consortio—also wrote the Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia, offering a cultural and pastoral continuity to the Magisterium of the Church on the family; he also mentioned Saint John XXIII, who used to say that the Church is not a museum because tradition is a body that grows and does so with wisdom: “on the ­topic of the family,” he said, “the Church is the institution that has spoken the most, defended the most, and understood the most.”

The Pontifical John Paul II Theological Institute for Marriage and Family Studies was founded on May 13, 1981, with the aim of offering the entire Church a renewed theological reflection on human love, marriage, family, and all their pastoral implications.

The Mexican Section of the Pontifical John Paul II Theological Institute is part of the Network of Anáhuac Universities. Its mission is to promote research and comprehensive formation of the person, marriage, and family.
