Cardinal Ezzati to new deacons: “Be signs of Christ’s presence in the lives of your brothers”

In an emotional ceremony, the Archbishop of Santiago, Cardinal Ricardo Ezzati, ordained Deacons of the Legionaries of Christ, Gastón Vicuña and Sebastián Rodríguez, in the chapel of Colegio Cumbres. Both alumni of the same school will receive the priestly ordination at St. John Lateran Basilica in Rome alongside 36 other members of their community, on December 10th.

A great celebration was experienced this Saturday, July 2nd, throughout the Regnum Christi family and the local church.

Chilean Sebastián Rodríguez and Gastón Vicuña were ordained deacons in the chapel of Colegio Cumbres, where they are alumni. Accompanied by their families, friends, Legionaries of Christ, consecrated persons, and members of Regnum Christi Chile, these future priests expressed great emotion for this step in their spiritual lives during this Holy Year of Mercy.

In his preaching, Cardinal Ezzati emphasized that: “They have been chosen by the Lord.” Quoting the Gospel of Saint John, he pointed out: “It is God who consecrates and God who sends. ‘I am the vine, you are the branches.’ ‘The vocation to follow Jesus is a grace that flows from Him,’ he emphasized.

It is Christ who dwells in me

The archbishop urged them to remember that: “Receiving and living the ministry of ordination does not involve status or human promotion: it is not about power or privileges, but about allowing Christ to grow in you and act through you, in an attitude of dedication and service.” The Cardinal encouraged the new deacons to “seek that the Lord, who came to serve and not to be served, appears in every word they pronounce and in every gesture they make. All their life, a sign and transparency of Christ, up to the spiritual stature described in the experience of Saint Paul: ‘It is no longer I who live, but Christ who dwells in me.’”

Finally, Ricardo Ezzati invited the new deacons to “seek and cultivate life in God, with constant prayer; that they hold in their hands every day the Gospel of Christ, of which they are made messengers, and nourish their vocation with the Eucharistic Bread that they will serve with their hands.”
