Dear Legionaries of Christ, consecrated laity of Regnum Christi, local directors, and members of the Movement,
I greet you from Houston, where these days we have seen that the sun begins to appear amidst the clouds.
On behalf of all of us here, we want to thank you for all your prayers, for the support you show us, and for the concern you express for all of us. Surely you have already seen the images and videos on the news, where you confirmed the destruction that Hurricane Harvey left in its wake.
We want to assure you, first, that both the house where the Legionaries’ community is located and the house of the consecrated women did not suffer floods or material damages. However, many members of Regnum Christi in the area had their homes severely damaged, and families had to leave their homes during the storm.
A great spirit of solidarity is felt in Houston, and members of the Movement are already reaching out to people to offer help in whatever way they can.
We would like to share what we are doing locally to help those affected. We know how immense the devastation was and that the road to recover what was lost will be a slow process.
We have also been receiving questions from various places about how to help, when groups can be organized to come and support, etc. Currently, there are still areas where water levels are waiting to go down. Other places are beginning a cleaning process.
With this in mind, we have organized here a committee of Regnum Christi members to develop a simple plan that will serve as a basis for support missions by the Movement groups that want to come in the coming months. We are in constant communication with the North American missions office, developing the support plan that we hope to share with everyone in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, the best support you can offer us at this moment is your prayers, especially for those who have suffered the most from everything caused by the hurricane. You can also send your donations through official organizations: the Red Cross (1-800-REDCROSS), via text message in the United States with the word HARVEY to 90999 (an automatic donation of $10 is made).
Catholic Charities USA is also available: You can make a donation by sending a text message in the United States with CCUSADISASTER to 71777.
Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston through https://catholiccharities.org/what-you-can-do/donate/donate-online-now-and-help-families-in-need/
Adore Ministries gathers information from people willing to help those affected in the area. They contact volunteers when they know someone who needs urgent support and offer them an action plan. Through them, it is also possible to make tax-deductible donations to acquire food and provide it to those who need it most. Their website is: http://adoreministries.com/support-2/
Furthermore, we appreciate all the support that, as the Regnum Christi family, you offer us here and in various parts of the world through your prayers and messages of support.
Count on our prayers as well.
Yours sincerely,
P. Eamonn Shelly, LC
