A Pontifical Academy is an institution that operates under the auspices and authority of the Pope, with the purpose of promoting and fostering research and study in various fields of knowledge. The Legionaries of Christ have four priests who are members of Pontifical Academies: Fr. Rodero is a member of the International Pontifical Marian Academy; Fathers Carrara and Miranda, of the Pontifical Academy for Life; and Fr. Barrajón, of the Pontifical Academy of Theology.

Fr. Alberto Carrara, L.C., is a professor of the philosophy faculty at the Regina Apostolorum Pontifical Athenaeum, and a member of the Pontifical Academy for Life since 2017, having been recently renewed for a new five-year term (2023-2028). He was specially selected for his experience in the field of neuroethics and anthropological perspectives in philosophy of mind and philosophy of neuroscience.

He was dean of the bioethics faculty at the Regina Apostolorum Pontifical Athenaeum, institution where he earned his doctorate with the thesis: “Euthanasia: pro-euthanasia anthropology and Christian anthropology”. He is the author of numerous books specialized in bioethics and currently continues teaching in the bioethics faculty of the Athenaeum.

And Fr. Florián Rodero, L.C., is a member of the International Pontifical Marian Academy. This is a coordinating body for scholars and students of Mariology from around the world, whose task consists of bringing together and fostering the exchange of ideas and experiences among the plurality of experts in this discipline from the major Christian denominations and responsible for organizing the International Mariological Marian Congress every four years.

Responsibilities of pontifical academies

Each Pontifical Academy is composed of experts in their respective disciplines. They can be both Catholic and non-Catholic, and they are dedicated to researching and promoting teaching and dialogue in their fields of study. These academies usually organize conferences, seminars and symposiums, publish research and advise the Holy See on matters related to their areas of competence.
