Renovated the College of Cardinals of Pope Francis

Cardinal Fernando Vérgez, LC, becomes a member of this council, an advisory body to assist in the governance of the Church

On March 7th, the appointment of the new members for Pope Francis’s Council of Cardinals was announced, colloquially known as the Pope’s G8. This council is an advisory body tasked with suggesting to the pope on the governance of the Church and was established by the current Pontiff’s will on April 13, 2013. To date, there have been four councils (2013-2014; 2014-2018; 2018-2020; and 2020-2023). The new one is as follows:

  • Card. Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State
  • Card. Fernando Vérgez, LC, President of the Governatorate of the Vatican City
  • Card. Fredolin Besungu, OFM cap, Archbishop of Kinshasa
  • Card. Seán O’Malley, OFM cap, Archbishop of Boston
  • Card. Juan José Omella, Archbishop of Barcelona
  • Card. Géral Lacroix, Archbishop of Quebec
  • Card. Jean-Claude Hollerich, SI, Archbishop of Luxembourg
  • Card. Sergio da Roxha, Archbishop of San Salvador de Bahia, Brazil

The secretary will be Mons. Marco Melino. These appointments are made upon the expiration of the previous Council’s term, and it will begin its sessions next April.

The Council of Cardinals has, for example, addressed the new Constitution on the Roman Curia.
