Fallece en Cancún el P. Jesús Cárdenas García, LC

On Friday, August 13, Father Jesús Cárdenas García, LC, passed away in the city of Cancún, Mexico.

Father Jesús Cárdenas was born in Sahuayo, Michoacán, on June 23, 1954. He entered the novitiate of the Legionaries of Christ on September 15, 1971. He took his first religious vows on October 4, 1973. He then continued his humanistic studies in Salamanca, Spain.

He obtained a License in Philosophy from the Pontifical Gregorian University and a Bachelor’s degree in Theology from the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome. He professed his perpetual vows on March 26, 1978, and was ordained a priest by Pope Saint John Paul II on January 3, 1991, in St. Peter’s Basilica.

As a religious, he carried out his pastoral work as a formation instructor at Oak Academy in Dublin. He began his ministry as a deacon and later as a priest, serving as the territorial secretary for Spain until 1993. Subsequently, he was appointed director of the youth section of Regnum Christi in Mérida, Mexico, and administrative vice-rector of the Universidad Anáhuac Mayab. From 1995 onward, he served as a parish priest in the current Diocese of Cancún-Chetumal, Mexico. In 2019, he reduced his pastoral activities due to illness.

On Friday, August 13, he returned to the house of the Father due to a pulmonary thromboembolism and subsequently an acute myocardial infarction. According to medical reports, he died around 3 a.m., while sleeping.

In a statement from the Diocese of Cancún-Chetumal, Mons. Pedro Pablo Elizondo, LC, recognized Father Jesús’s work: “I feel extremely grateful for his long and selfless ministerial service in various parishes and communities, which remember him with much affection and gratitude in this particular Church. He spent and exhausted his life with great zeal and generosity in building the Church,” said the Bishop. Paraphrasing the Missal, he asked to entrust Father Cárdenas so that “just as he has already shared in the death of Jesus Christ, he may also share with Him in the glory of the resurrection.”
