Enrique Tapia, LC, holds a doctorate in Theology with a thesis on vocational discernment according to Saint John of \u00c1vila<\/p>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cThe Vocational Discernment According to Saint John of \u00c1vila\u201d is the title of the thesis presented by the novice instructor of <a href=\"http:\/\/noviciadodesalamanca.es\/\" target=\"_blank\">novices<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/regnumchristi.es\/salamanca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Salamanca<\/a>, P. Enrique Tapia, LC, to obtain his doctorate in the faculty of theology at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upra.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum<\/a>, in Rome.<\/p>\n<p>His thesis is divided into three parts: a terminological and historical approach to vocational discernment; an analysis of the practice and doctrine regarding vocational discernment in Saint John of \u00c1vila; and a presentation of a proposal to put into practice the teachings of Saint John of \u00c1vila in our days.<\/p>\n<p>As Father Enrique explained, he chose this field of study because \u201cI wanted a topic that would help me in my ministry and also help the Legion; vocational discernment is one of the themes that has been more present in recent years and in which there was a need to deepen (not only in the Legion but throughout the Church, as can be seen in the recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clerus.va\/content\/dam\/clerus\/Ratio%20Fundamentalis\/El%20Don%20de%20la%20vocaci%C3%B3n%20presbiteral.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Ratio Fundamentalis Institutionis Sacerdotalis<\/a>, published by the Holy See on December 8, 2016).\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7245\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7245\" style=\"width: 213px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a ref=\"magnificPopup\" href=\"http:\/\/legionariosdecristo.org\/es\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/02\/San-Juan-de-Avila.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7245\" src=\"http:\/\/legionariosdecristo.org\/es\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/02\/San-Juan-de-Avila-213x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"213\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/subdir.legionariosdecristo.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/02\/San-Juan-de-Avila-213x300.jpg 213w, https:\/\/subdir.legionariosdecristo.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/02\/San-Juan-de-Avila.jpg 384w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 213px) 100vw, 213px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7245\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Saint John of \u00c1vila<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4>Five Elements of a Vocation<\/h4>\n<p>In light of his research, Father Enrique considers that when discerning a vocation, some fundamental aspects must be kept in mind, which are:<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cdivine call\u201d: this is the most spiritual aspect and the least externally verifiable (in itself, it cannot be subject to verification), but it is the foundational element of every vocation: it is God who calls.<\/p>\n<p>Secondly, the suitability of the candidate: physical, psychological, human, intellectual, moral, and spiritual. \u201cSuitability means being fit, having the set of qualities necessary for a particular state of life and mission\u201d \u2013Father Enrique explained\u2013. According to the testimony of Tradition, vocation manifests primarily through aptitudes. Suitability is the first sign of a possible vocation. God, whom He chooses for a mission, prepares and arranges with specific qualities. And the Church, throughout history, has legislated on the necessary requirements for a ministerial or consecrated vocation.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7246\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7246\" style=\"width: 193px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a ref=\"magnificPopup\" href=\"http:\/\/legionariosdecristo.org\/es\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/02\/P.-Enrique-con-su-tesis-doctoral.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7246\" src=\"http:\/\/legionariosdecristo.org\/es\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/02\/P.-Enrique-con-su-tesis-doctoral-193x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"193\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/subdir.legionariosdecristo.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/02\/P.-Enrique-con-su-tesis-doctoral-193x300.jpg 193w, https:\/\/subdir.legionariosdecristo.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/02\/P.-Enrique-con-su-tesis-doctoral.jpg 576w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 193px) 100vw, 193px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7246\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">P. Enrique with his doctoral thesis<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Right intention. \u201cVocation intention is right when it looks toward the proper end, which is solely total love and exclusive service to God. Candidates for the priesthood and the consecrated life, with the help of their formators \u2013the rector of the Salamanca seminary pointed out\u2013, must examine these motivations sincerely to evaluate whether there is or not rectitude of intention in the path undertaken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, there must be a free and generous response. \u201cSacred Scripture clearly shows how God respects the freedom of those He calls, only expecting a free and generous response. Throughout history, the Church has affirmed that anyone who wishes to dedicate their life to God in the priesthood or consecrated life must do so freely,\u201d Father Enrique noted.<\/p>\n<p>The call or approval by the Church constitutes the fifth element: \u201cSince Sacred Scripture, even in post-Easter times, we see how when God calls a person, they submit to the leaders of the community,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>The tribunal that judged the thesis, composed of Fathers Fran\u00e7ois Marie L\u00e9thel, OCD (thesis director), Flori\u00e1n Rodero, LC (second reviewer), and Edward McNamara, LC (dean of the faculty of theology), awarded it Summa cum laude. Several members of Father Enrique\u2019s family, as well as several Legionaries of Christ from Rome and Mons.
