He is a surgical doctor specializing in forensic medicine. He joined the Regnum Christi Movement in 1998 and the second degree in 2002. He has been responsible for teams and groups in the youth section of Rome. He was one of the founders of Youth Missionary in his city. He has also organized apostolates such as Angelo per un Giorno and Gente Nuova in Rome. He was Secretary General of the European University of Rome from its founding until 2008, and continues to collaborate as a lecturer in forensic medicine. Since 2008, he has been working for the Holy See at the Pontifical Council for the Laity as head of the Ecclesial Associations and Movements section.

Stefano, you have experienced the process of renewal of first and second degree members from the Central Commission for the revision of the Statute. What has been your experience over these months?

I would like to describe my experience in the Central Commission with three words: service, enrichment, and grace. It has been a special way to serve Regnum Christi, which, although modest, I hope is useful. The dimension of service is for me a response to so much good I have received from the Movement in my nearly twenty years of belonging to it. It has also been a personal enrichment, especially as I have been able to share these historic moments and listen to the Holy Spirit along with other brothers and sisters who share the same charismatic experience in different states of life and formation: consecrated, brothers and priests of the Legion of Christ. Finally, grace. I don’t know why this opportunity was given to me, but I have considered it from a providential perspective. I carry it in my heart as something important in my personal history and in the path I am walking in the Regnum Christi. For all these reasons, I consider it fundamental to say to everyone who made it possible: Thank you!

You speak of historic moments for the Movement. Is this renewal process really so important?

Of course! It is important because, as its name indicates, it is a renewal. Above all, a personal renewal rather than just structural. We need to renew the heart of each of us, our faith, our relationship with Christ, and our apostolic zeal. I consider this an essential part of the reform project that Pope Francis proposes to the Church and to every Christian. Essentially, every baptized person lives in a process of constant review and renewal, returning to their roots, to the baptismal font, and this is precisely conversion. When Mother Teresa of Calcutta was asked what should be changed in the Church, she replied: “First of all, two things: you and me!”

What does this process contribute to first and second degree members, and what contribution are they making to the entire Movement?

We, the first and second degree members of Regnum Christi, are called to promote the charism that God has entrusted to us for the good of the Church in today’s world, specifically in the social, family, and work realities we encounter every day. The renewal process would have no meaning if we did not bring the novelty of the Gospel to the existential peripheries of man, to so many brothers who hope to discover Christ through our words and actions. Benedict XVI said that laypeople are called to be fig tree cutters, capable, if they act according to their vocation, of bearing tasty fruits in this world that, unfortunately, offers many fruits but without flavor. This process is a great opportunity for us, first and second degree members, to look back and inward, but above all, as Pope Francis says, to let ourselves be looked at by God. We want to become aware of our vocation and mission and ask ourselves if we are truly willing to continue this path to which the Lord has called us, a path that now demands greater commitment and responsibility from us.

What do you think are the most important challenges that first and second degree members must face at this moment regarding the process?

For me, the most important challenge is to become more aware of our identity as Christians, baptized and members of the Movement. Fulfilling our vocation necessarily involves this arduous path of renewal: who are we? But above all: what does God expect from us? From this follows the challenge of responsibility, that is, to assume our role within the family of Regnum Christi alongside the Legionaries, consecrated persons, and lay members. It is up to us to share with them the joys and difficulties of this spiritual journey that the Lord offers us in the Movement, which is a path of evangelical radicalism. Everything else: practical matters, regulations, canonical modality of our membership in the Movement as lay members, etc., will be resolved over time, with patience, self-denial, and, of course, with God’s help.

Some people have expressed to the Commission their concern because the current Statutes, approved in 2004, contain ambiguity regarding the canonical mode of membership for lay members. Since you work at the Pontifical Council for the Laity and often deal with technical aspects, can you explain to those of us who are not specialists what this issue consists of and how it should be addressed?

The problem is indeed of a technical nature, but it has implications for the life of the members and for drafting a general Statute that helps us safeguard and develop the charism that God has given to the Church through the Movement. The Church recognizes the natural right of the faithful to associate. It also recognizes various ways of participating or being members of a association of the faithful like Regnum Christi.

Although it is a simplification, we can say that there are two possible ways for a Catholic to be part of the Movement: association and affiliation. In both modes, people are equally members and participate in the spirituality and apostolate of Regnum Christi. However, through association, they are members who assume rights and responsibilities of their own, including stable participation in the direction and governance of the Movement. In contrast, through affiliation, members participate in the spirit and charism of the Movement but do not assume special responsibilities for its governance, although, according to the statute, they may be invited to participate and take on leadership roles in the Movement.

The ambiguity that some people correctly point out is that the current Statutes state that members are associates. However, in practice, we have been more like affiliates so far, since the Statutes do not provide for a right to participate in certain decision-making bodies, although in practice we are invited to be part of them, as I am in this commission, or Francisco Gámez in the General Steering Committee of the Movement, or many section directors and local lay coordinators around the world.

What the Central Commission aims to do is listen to what first and second degree members express about their mode of belonging, as they have experienced it and as they believe the Holy Spirit is leading them for the good of the Movement, its unity, and its apostolic development.

But what impact does this have on our lives?

If I may, I will use an image that might shed light on what I want to say, fully aware that it does not apply completely. For many years, we have lived in practice, and from a legal point of view, as collaborators in the mission of the Legion of Christ, and together we have achieved great things for evangelization. We have benefited from the dedication and formation of many Legionaries and also from consecrated members who have transmitted the charism and helped us encounter Christ to become His apostles. I do not think, at all, that this has been a mistake. I see it as a process of growth: a child needs their parents in the early years and depends on them entirely. As they grow, they begin to contribute significantly to the family by offering their particularity and sharing in joys and sorrows.

Reflecting on our associative life in the Movement will help us to reflect before God so that He shows us where laypeople should position themselves and how we can better contribute to fulfilling the mission. This will lead us to assume more responsibilities and contribute more actively with other members of the Movement: Legionaries, consecrated persons, and lay members. It is not about politics, but about ecclesial maturity, as John Paul II asked all ecclesial movements during Pentecost 1998.

Do you perceive interest from Legionaries, consecrated persons, and laypeople in this process?

I have to be honest. Yes, I see it in many, but I also perceive some fatigue in others. First of all, I see the passion and dedication of the other members of the Central Commission and many in the territorial commissions. Not only that, I perceive great courage, especially on the part of the Legion in general and Father Eduardo in particular, in their desire to continue this path, trusting so much in us, first and second degree members.

I also know that some are skeptical, they do not fully understand the process or the need to share the charism fully with first and second degree members. I have even met someone who a priori distrusts the process without having read the documents we have sent, which could shed light. But I must say I understand them. The future is not always clear, and this can cause fear.

But I am sure of one thing: the Lord calls us to face this renewal process together, as a community, just as He calls the Church to renew itself as the People of God, regardless of our state of life: laypeople, lay consecrated, religious, priests. This great challenge that God places before us, either we face it and overcome it together, or we all lose.

I believe that what Pope Francis says in number 113 of Evangelii Gaudium is especially true for us: “No one is saved alone.” God calls us as a people! Today, God is calling us in Regnum Christi as a community, all together, despite our differences and sometimes difficulty in agreeing, as in any family. We must respond with unity, charity, and the deepest sense of belonging to a community, what we call in the Church communion, which is always realized in truth.

Would you like to say something to Legionaries, consecrated persons, and lay consecrated persons regarding their participation in this stage of discernment of first and second degree members that we are currently in?

Of course: We need each other, like a family! We, first and second degree members, need you, your presence, your closeness, your friendship in Christ. I am married and have two children. I know how difficult it is in a family, in our diversity, to stay united and love each other in dark moments. But my life and existence make no sense without my wife and children. Even if we fight, even when we make mistakes and hurt each other. Similarly, I am a second degree member of Regnum Christi, but I do not feel that my calling makes sense, that my identity and mission can exist without the Legionaries, consecrated persons, first degree members, and without your help, support, prayer, and love. Let’s move forward together! I am sure that God will help us and that we will discover the joy of the Gospel together!

Is there anything else you would like to say?

A special Pentecost awaits us, which will be the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Legion’s founding, the Year of Mercy Jubilee, and the occasion of our first international convention. We have a long way to go, but this coming year will be an important step forward. Let us pray and participate together in this time when God makes His presence especially felt in our lives.

Pentecost is the feast of all charisms inspired by the Holy Spirit. Our international convention will be an extraordinary opportunity for renewal. I remember that one of the delegates from the 38 first and second degree members of Regnum Christi who represented the entire Movement at the start of this process, participating in a three-day meeting to study the Statutes, said: “I thought I had come to examine the Statutes; but instead, talking with you, praying together before the Blessed Sacrament, I feel I have participated in the most beautiful triduum of renewal I have experienced in Regnum Christi.” Let’s open our hearts to the Lord, and He will reward us! Let’s not let this great opportunity slip away, all together, in fraternal communion!

Last Friday, July 9th, Father Sylvester
