This is what Father Alberto Carrara, L.C. maintains. —Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy of the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum, president of the International Institute of Neurobioethics, member of the Pontifical Academy for Life and author of the book Christians in the Time of AI.

Artificial intelligence has entered our daily lives with extraordinary speed. We use it to search for information, translate texts, prepare presentations, create images, organize our work, study, communicate, and solve problems. In just a few years, we have gone from wondering what artificial intelligence could do to wondering what might remain beyond its reach. Yet, perhaps this is not the most important question. The real question is: what is artificial intelligence doing to us? It is not a matter of stoking fears or creating a simplistic opposition between humanity and technology. Artificial intelligence offers extraordinary possibilities for medicine, education, scientific research, communication, and many other areas of human activity. Like any major innovation, it can become an instrument of genuine progress. However, precisely because its reach is so profound, we need to ask what happens to certain dimensions that lie at the core of our humanity: freedom, judgment, and identity. This is one of the central themes I explore in my book Christians in the Age of AI. The issue is not simply learning how to use new tools. The true challenge is learning how to live humanly—and as Christians—amidst this transformation.

When we delegate more than just tasks
For centuries, technologies have expanded our physical and cognitive capabilities. Writing extended memory. Books multiplied access to knowledge. Calculators helped us perform operations. The Internet transformed our way of searching for information. Artificial intelligence introduces, however, a qualitative change. We no longer delegate only mechanical tasks. We can also begin to delegate processes that until now we considered closely linked to human thought: developing an argument, interpreting a situation, writing a letter, advising a person or even helping ourselves to decide. An artificial intelligence can suggest what to read, what to buy, what movie to watch, where to move and what response to send to someone. Algorithms select a good part of the news we receive, the content we see and the opinions we come into contact with. The anthropological question then appears in full force: if we continually delegate our choices, do we continue to exercise our freedom?

Human freedom does not consist merely of choosing between various options. It is a deeply personal capacity: it involves intelligence, will, responsibility, conscience, and an orientation toward the good. A machine can calculate possibilities. It can identify patterns. It can even suggest what appears to be the most effective option. But it cannot replace the deeply human act of making a decision responsibly. The risk is not that artificial intelligence will suddenly strip us of our freedom. The more subtle risk is that we will gradually cease to exercise it.

Human freedom does not consist simply of choosing between various options. It is a deeply personal capacity: it involves intelligence, will, responsibility, conscience, and an orientation toward the good.

From Access to Information to the Exercise of Judgment
The second major challenge is the exercise of judgment. Never in history have we had access to so much information. And, paradoxically, never has it been so necessary to learn how to discern. Generative artificial intelligence can produce convincing texts, extraordinarily realistic images, and answers formulated with great confidence. But a well-written answer is not necessarily true. A statement repeated thousands of times does not thereby become true. And what an algorithm deems relevant does not necessarily align with what is true, good, or important. That is why, in the age of artificial intelligence, education cannot be reduced to the transmission of information; it must teach us how to think. We need to reclaim one of the great callings of philosophy and the Christian tradition: to form individuals capable of questioning, challenging, distinguishing, arguing, and discerning. It is not enough to ask artificial intelligence, “What should I think?” We must learn to ask ourselves: Why should I consider this true? What view of the human being lies behind it? What consequences would this decision have? Does it truly promote the good of the person?

In this sense, the more powerful artificial intelligence is, the more important human training will be. We will need more philosophy, not less. More critical thinking. More ethics. More capacity for silence and reflection. More awareness education. And, for the Christian, a deep capacity for spiritual discernment will also be necessary. Not everything that is technically possible is humanly convenient. Not everything efficient is good. Not everything that increases our capabilities necessarily contributes to our fulfillment.

Who am I when the algorithm seems to know me?
There remains a third challenge, perhaps even more profound: identity. We live surrounded by systems that analyze our behavior. Every search, every click, every scroll, and every digital interaction can contribute to building profiles of our preferences, habits, and interests. Sometimes, the algorithm seems to anticipate what we want before we even explicitly formulate it. Yet here we must draw a fundamental distinction: a profile is not a person. A human being cannot be reduced to a set of data. We can analyze behavior, identify correlations, study biological characteristics, or describe psychological patterns. All of this can yield valuable insights. But no accumulation of data fully captures the mystery of a person.

We are creatures loved by God, made in His image, called personally by Him. This conviction can become one of the great points of support for Christians in the digital ecosystem.

From Christian anthropology, human identity is not simply the result of our preferences, our performance, our brain activity or our digital footprint. We are people. We are bodily and spiritual beings, relational, vulnerable, capable of loving, suffering, forgiving, transcending ourselves and freely directing our existence towards good. And for the Christian faith there is an even more radical statement: our deepest identity does not come from what we produce or what others think of us. We are creatures loved by God, made in His image, called personally by Him. This conviction can become one of the great points of support for Christians in the digital ecosystem. Because when the technological world tends to identify us through data, profiles and performance, Christianity once again reminds us that the value of a person cannot be calculated.

From the perspective of Christian anthropology, human identity is not merely the result of our preferences, our performance, our brain activity, or our fingerprints. We are persons. We are beings who are both bodily and spiritual, relational, and vulnerable—capable of loving, suffering, forgiving, transcending ourselves, and freely directing our existence toward the good. And for the Christian faith, there is an even more radical assertion: our deepest identity stems neither from what we produce nor from what others think of us. We are creatures cherished by God, made in His image, and personally called by Him. This conviction can become a vital anchor for the Christian within the digital ecosystem. For while the technological world tends to define us through data, profiles, and performance, Christianity reminds us once again that a person’s worth cannot be calculated.

The hour of the Christians
That is why I chose to title the book Christians in the Age of AI. It is not a book against artificial intelligence. On the contrary: we need to know these technologies, understand them, use them responsibly, and actively participate in building the new world they are shaping—but doing so based on a holistic view of the human person. We Christians cannot simply watch this transformation from the sidelines; we are called to inhabit it. We must be present in universities, research, tech companies, education, politics, culture, and the media. We need programmers, scientists, philosophers, educators, priests, business leaders, and young people capable of bringing an authentic culture of the human person into the heart of the technological revolution. For the great question regarding artificial intelligence will ultimately not be how much machines can do, but rather what kind of human beings we want to become.

In this context, safeguarding humanity means learning to use technology without becoming its passive users; harnessing artificial intelligence without delegating our conscience to it; allowing algorithms to assist us without letting them replace our judgment. It means keeping alive our capacity for wonder, for encounter, and for silence. It means looking at the other person not as a data profile, but as a face. And it means remembering that no artificial intelligence will ever be able to replace what lies at the heart of human existence: loving and being loved.

Safeguarding humanity means learning to use technology without becoming its passive users; harnessing artificial intelligence without delegating our conscience to it; and allowing algorithms to assist us without letting them replace our judgment.

Perhaps for this reason, the era of artificial intelligence may also become an extraordinary opportunity to rediscover what no machine can give us: the meaning of our freedom, the formation of our conscience, the depth of our identity, and the transcendent vocation of the human person.

Technology is advancing rapidly. It is our responsibility to ensure that, as it does so, humanity is not left behind. And for us Christians, there is an even greater responsibility: to help ensure that this new technological world remains open to mystery, to the dignity of every person, and to hope. For even in the age of artificial intelligence, the truth that Christianity has proclaimed for two thousand years remains valid: the future of the human being depends not only on what one is capable of building, but on who one chooses to be and for whom one chooses to live.

About the Author

Fr.
