organization of Catholic teenagers committed to following Christ\u2019s example and bearing witness to charity, sincerity, friendship, purity, and generosity.<\/p>\n<p>Since the early 1960s, with the <em>Cruzados de Cristo Rey<\/em>, the Legionaries had attempted to establish an organization in Mexico City specifically dedicated to teenagers, but it did not prosper. However, around 1970, they renewed their efforts, motivated by the positive experiences of the early steps of Regnum Christi. In 1971, the first incorporations into ECyD took place. The acronym stands for <em>Educaci\u00f3n, Cultura y Deporte<\/em> (Education, Culture, and Sports), summarizing the three main areas of activity offered to adolescents. The operational base for activities in each ECyD center was called a \u201cclub.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The launch of ECyD quickly became a major focus for both Regnum Christi sections and many Legionary religious. This led to the establishment of numerous clubs in different cities between 1972 and 1973.<\/p>\n<p>The first clubs in Spain were <em>San Pablo<\/em> in Salamanca (February 1972) and <em>Everest<\/em> in Madrid (May 1973). In Mexico, they were <em>Faro<\/em> in Monterrey and <em>Kilimanjaro<\/em> in Mexico City (September 1972). Italy also saw the foundation of a club, <em>Vetta<\/em> in Rome (January 1973). In July 1974, the <strong>First International ECyD Convention<\/strong> was held in Ontaneda, Spain, with the participation of 54 teenagers from Spain, Mexico, Ireland, and Italy. They gathered to discuss the theme: <em>Christ\u2019s challenge to modern youth<\/em>. Sports and cultural clubs multiplied rapidly.<\/p>\n<p>To further train and inspire young people, additional activities such as summer camps and various associations were introduced. ECyD quickly spread to the United States, where the acronym was translated as <strong>Education, Culture, and Youth Development<\/strong>, adding the concept of youth development to its mission.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section><section class=\"l-section wpb_row us_custom_dc3ff307 has_text_color height_small color_alternate\"><div class=\"l-section-h i-cf\"><div class=\"g-cols vc_row via_grid cols_2-1 laptops-cols_inherit tablets-cols_inherit mobiles-cols_1 valign_top type_default stacking_default\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"w-vwrapper align_none valign_top\"><h5 class=\"w-text us_custom_f03ee871 icon_atleft\"><span class=\"w-text-h\"><i class=\"far fa-calendar\"><\/i><span class=\"w-text-value\">1983<\/span><\/span><\/h5><\/div><div class=\"w-vwrapper align_none valign_top\"><h3 class=\"w-text us_custom_f03ee871\"><span class=\"w-text-h\"><span class=\"w-text-value\">First statutes of ECyD<\/span><\/span><\/h3><\/div><div class=\"w-separator size_custom with_line width_default thick_1 style_solid color_border align_center\" style=\"height:40px\"><div class=\"w-separator-h\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_text_column us_custom_432d3f53\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p>In 1983, the number of ECyD members surpassed three thousand, and it became necessary to draft its statutes to define its nature, spiritual guidelines, and organizational structure, both at the general level and at the club level.<\/p>\n<p>In these Statutes, the process of adolescent formation was articulated and divided into four progressive stages. According to the Statutes, ECyD aimed to complement educational institutions and family life, led by the Regnum Christi Movement, and to support bishops and parish priests in the implementation of their diocesan pastoral programs.<\/p>\n<p>The Second Ordinary General Chapter of the Legion of Christ in 1992 paid special attention to ECyD, stating that all Legionaries working with the delicate world of adolescents were required to deepen their studies in developmental psychology.<\/p>\n<p>By the year 2000, ECyD had tens of thousands of members from nearly thirty different nationalities. These members participated in various programs specifically dedicated to the adolescent world. Among these were at least: Conquest, Challenge, Pure Fashion, Leading K4J, Mission Corp, and Mission Youth.<\/p>\n<p>Starting in 2008, a commission composed of Regnum Christi lay members and Legionaries of Christ held a series of meetings to reflect on the mission and identity of ECyD in light of current circumstances.
