It was held in two separate sessions: the first in Rome in 1968, and the second in Dublin in 1969. Seventeen capitular fathers participated and, for the first time, elected the governing body and produced two successive documents: the <em>Message of the General Chapter to all the Legionaries<\/em> (1968), and the <em>Communication of the Participating Fathers in the First General Chapter to all the Religious of the Legion at the end of the sessions held during the second period, August-October 1969<\/em> (1969).<\/p>\n<p>Both texts emphasized the Congregation&#8217;s full adherence to the Church and to the pope in those early post-conciliar years, the importance for all Legionaries to observe the spirit of the Constitutions, the significance of co-responsibility in carrying out the assigned mission, and the essential need for profound apostolic preparation in all fields in order to face the growth in various activities and works that were taking place.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"w-separator size_custom with_line width_default thick_1 style_solid color_border align_center\" style=\"height:50px\"><div class=\"w-separator-h\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"w-hwrapper valign_top align_none\"><div class=\"w-iconbox iconpos_top style_default color_custom align_center no_text no_title\"><div class=\"w-iconbox-icon\" style=\"font-size:2rem;--icon-color:var(--color-header-top-text);\"><i class=\"fas fa-info\"><\/i><\/div><div class=\"w-iconbox-meta\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_text_column us_custom_7bc28c80\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p>[1] Rome, autumn 1968, chapel of the General House of the Legion of Christ: the capitular fathers in prayer during the first session of the Extraordinary General Chapter. On this occasion, 24 capitular fathers participated. The result of the work from this chapter was the Chapter Communiqu\u00e9, which was published in 1984.<\/p>\n<p>On October 10, the Chapter was solemnly inaugurated with a Mass presided over by the Servant of God, Cardinal Eduardo Pironio, Prefect of the Congregation for Religious and Secular Institutes. The cardinal invited the capitular fathers to be guided by the Holy Spirit, reminded them of the ecclesial sense of a general chapter, and said, &#8220;With all my heart, I am with the Legionaries.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>During the following weeks, other ecclesiastics from the Roman Curia presided over the Eucharistic celebrations: Monsignor Augustin Mayer, OSB, Secretary of the Congregation for Religious, who thanked them for their fidelity to the Pope; Monsignor Antonio Javierre, SDB, Secretary of the Congregation for Catholic Education, who invited the attendees to be fervent disciples of Christ and teachers of the faith; Cardinal Sebastiano Baggio, Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops; and finally, Monsignor Girolamo Prigione, who exhorted the religious to remain faithful to their vocation.<\/p>\n<p>During the sessions, the capitular fathers focused on reviewing the text of the Constitutions and concentrated especially on the situation of the world and the Church and the journey of the Legion from 1969 to 1980. In this Chapter, the capitular fathers specifically urged vigilance against secularization trends, confronted social issues, issued norms regarding religious discipline and liturgy, encouraged knowing and valuing the history and spirit of the Legion, and emphasized strengthening the apostolic works undertaken.<\/p>\n<p>On November 26, 1980, during a General Audience, Pope John Paul II greeted the capitular fathers, urging them to remain faithful to the Church and their own vocation.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"w-separator size_custom with_line width_default thick_1 style_solid color_border align_center\" style=\"height:50px\"><div class=\"w-separator-h\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"w-hwrapper valign_top align_none\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column us_custom_edc1cf6f\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p>[1] Dublin, Novitiate of the Legion of Christ, 1969: The capitular fathers during a break, during the work of the second session of the Extraordinary General Chapter. A total of 26 capitular fathers participated between November and December of 1992. The results of the proceedings were published in 1993 under the title &#8220;Communiqu\u00e9 and Decrees.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This text primarily focuses on the mission of the Legion of Christ in the Church at the time, the process of internal institutionalization that had characterized the Congregation in the 1980s, and the formation of the religious of the Institute.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, it extensively addresses the situation of the Prelature of Chetumal, the Regnum Christi Movement, ECYD, and other apostolic works. It also updates some disciplinary norms. On December 18, 1992, Pope John Paul II received the capitular fathers in a private audience in the Throne Room of the Apostolic Palace; the Holy Father exhorted them with the following words:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;God the Father has blessed you with an abundance of vocations, to which you seek to provide human, doctrinal, and spiritual formation in light of the challenges that the Church faces in the current age. In September of the same year, the corresponding volume of Communiqu\u00e9 and Decrees was published. This text highlights the centrality of Christian love in the Legionary charism and how love must be known, lived, and transmitted.<\/p>\n<p>In conclusion, the Legionaries are invited to look with gratitude to the past, to live the challenges of the present with passion, and to open themselves to the future with confidence.
